The APR Basketball Club in the men’s category and the REG Basketball Club in the women’s category made history by winning the inaugural Super Cup 2025, marking the beginning of the basketball championship season.
The games took place on the evening of Friday, January 17, 2025, at the BK Arena, where fans and spectators passionately supported their teams.
In the men’s game, APR BBC aimed to challenge REG BBC, with the game starting off with intense competition from both sides. The first quarter showed tight gameplay, with APR BBC taking the lead thanks to players like Axel Mpoyo, but by the end of the quarter, REG BBC, led by Thomas Cleveland, took over the lead, finishing the first quarter ahead 19-18.\
In the second quarter, APR BBC pushed hard to close the gap, playing with renewed energy and slowly building a lead. APR BBC capitalized on mistakes from REG BBC, and at halftime, APR BBC was leading 33-30.
After the break, REG BBC made adjustments and corrected their earlier mistakes, managing to reduce the point gap and briefly take the lead. However, APR BBC, fueled by key players like Aliou Diarra and Jean Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukiza, regained control and extended their lead. The third quarter ended with APR BBC ahead 53-42.
In the final quarter, REG BBC tried to mount a comeback, with players like Thomas Cleveland trying to close the gap. However, APR BBC remained firm, and with their well-coordinated play, they dominated the closing minutes, sealing the game with a 74-53 victory and claiming the Super Cup in the men’s category.
In the women’s game, REG BBC performed excellently against APR BBC, winning 76-64 to claim the Super Cup in the women’s category.
The Super Cup games were organized by the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) and were held for the first time. These games will become an annual event, taking place before the start of the regular basketball season, with the winning teams from the Basketball Championship and the Rwanda Cup facing off in a single match for the coveted trophy.
The goal of this competition is to highlight the importance of basketball tournaments in Rwanda, and the new basketball season for both men and women will officially begin on January 24, 2025.
