The APR BBC team kicked off the Kwibuka Genocide Commemoration Tournament of 1994 with a victory, defeating KPA from Kenya 99-61 in a match held at Petit Stade on Thursday.
The game started with intense energy, as APR BBC quickly took control, scoring 9-0 in the first two minutes, thanks to Mpoyo Axel, who scored three consecutive baskets during that period.
However, KPA was not willing to let APR dominate the match, and they soon began to fight back, led by Morel Spencer, one of the standout players for KPA. The Kenyan team managed to reduce the point difference, and the first quarter ended with APR leading 26-21.
In the second quarter, APR BBC continued to display professionalism, with players like Chasson and Ndoye, along with other key contributors, increasing their lead and extending the gap. APR went into halftime leading 53-35, maintaining their dominance.
After the break, it was expected that KPA would make a strong comeback, but APR BBC kept pushing forward, particularly with Justin, who hit three consecutive three-pointers. KPA struggled to maintain their performance, especially after playing a tough match earlier against REG BBC at noon, which affected their stamina. This led to KPA losing energy on the court, allowing APR BBC to widen the gap further.
The military team continued their march toward victory, with the match ending 75-45 in the third quarter, before concluding with a final score of 99-61.
In addition to the APR BBC vs. KPA match, another thrilling encounter took place earlier on Thursday, where UGB narrowly defeated Dar City BBC from Tanzania 75-74. In a prior game, KPA had also won against REG BBC, with a close scoreline of 58-55.
In the women’s category, APR W BBC won against Kepler 58-55, while JKL Lady Dolphins defeated EAUR 96-73.
The tournament continues on Friday with the final group stage matches. At 13:30 pm, KPA W BBC will face APR W BBC, and at 16:00, REG W BBC will play against JKL Lady Dolphins. In the men’s category, Dar City BBC will play Patriots at 18:30, and at 21:00, APR BBC will take on REG BBC. All matches will be held at Petit Stade.
