Gospel artist, actor, and preacher Habiyaremye Zacharie, widely known as Bishop Gafaranga, was arrested by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on May 7, 2025. The 35-year-old is being investigated for alleged acts of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), a case that has stirred public attention and discussions on social media and in the press.
His arrest was confirmed by Dr. Thierry B. Murangira, the RIB spokesperson, who stated that Bishop Gafaranga is being held at the RIB Station in Nyamata, Bugesera District, as investigations continue. Dr. Murangira said: “RIB arrested Pastor Habiyaremye Zacharie on suspicion of committing acts of gender-based violence. Investigations are ongoing to determine the truth of the allegations.”
The alleged offenses include actions such as unsolicited physical contact, use of threats or intimidation to obtain sexual favors, or using one’s position of authority to exploit others sexually. These acts fall under Article 136 and related provisions of Rwanda’s Penal Code.
Rwandan law emphasizes the protection of human dignity, safety, and respect, and imposes strict penalties for GBV, especially when committed by individuals in positions of power such as leaders, civil servants, or religious figures.
Habiyaremye Zacharie gained fame in Rwanda through his roles in popular local dramas like Sakwe Sakwe and gospel songs that preach forgiveness and hope. His arrest shocked many, particularly within his church community, where he was considered a role model for Christian youth.
RIB has urged the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions and to allow the investigation to proceed transparently and fairly. However, GBV accusations should always be treated with seriousness, as they deeply affect the lives and dignity of survivors.
RIB also reminded the public that anyone with information or testimony relevant to the case is encouraged to come forward and assist in uncovering the truth.
