Baku, Azerbaijan – During the international COP29 conference held on November 15, 2024, global representatives convened to seek solutions to the challenges of climate change. However, the reluctance of wealthy nations to commit to financial aid for addressing these issues once again overshadowed the goals of this meeting.
A new report titled “Fair Shares, Finance, Transformation”, released by over 300 international non-governmental organizations, revealed that the issue is not the lack of funds but a lack of political will. The report highlighted how countries in the Global North continue to evade their responsibilities to provide funding in line with the Paris Agreement of 2015.
Testimonies Revealing the Truth
Lidy Nacpil, one of the report’s authors, stated: “Providing climate finance that does not cripple the economies of the Global South is not optional—it is essential. The world needs transformative changes that establish a pathway to justice and reshape the structure of global political economics.”
American journalist Tom Athanasiou questioned: “If rich nations refuse to fund solutions for saving the planet, the COP process will remain an unfulfilled dream. The resources are available, but there must be new policies and a commitment to equitable peace.”
The Path to Change
The report demonstrated that resources to combat climate change exist, including taxing the ultra-wealthy, reducing profits from coal industries, and implementing government initiatives aimed at halting projects from high-polluting industries.
