The campaign to eradicate AIDS has reminded Rwandans that the goal of ending this epidemic by 2030 is achievable if everyone takes the lead. On December 2, DUHAMIC-ADRI, in partnership with Nyarugenge District, visited Nyabugogo Market in Nkundamahoro, where traders and customers had the opportunity to get free HIV testing and receive condoms.
This initiative emphasized that bringing services closer to the people helps them know their status and take steps to protect themselves and others. Bernard Harushyabana, Director of USAID Igire Jyambere, stated that Nyabugogo was chosen due to its diverse population, ensuring the message reached many people.
Research shows that 35% of new HIV infections occur among young people, especially young women. Alexis Ingangare, the Executive Administrator of Nyarugenge District, emphasized the need to increase awareness among youth and encourage testing.
As the world observes AIDS Awareness Month under the theme, “Eradicating AIDS is My Responsibility,” participants in this event took a step towards contributing to the eradication of the epidemic in Rwanda.
