Italy is deepening its strategic ties in the Horn of Africa as part of a broader push to enhance regional security and combat terrorism, with a high-level military delegation led by Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Luciano Portolano, visiting Somalia this week.
The visit signals not only a reaffirmation of military cooperation but also Italy’s broader geopolitical interest in stabilizing the region, which serves as a crucial gateway between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
While discussions with Somali military officials centered on training and operational support, the Italian delegation also explored long-term collaboration in areas such as intelligence sharing, logistics, and medical infrastructure—elements crucial for building a sustainable and autonomous Somali defense system.
Gen. Portolano emphasized Italy’s enduring commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and security, stating that a stable Somalia contributes to regional maritime security, combats the spread of extremism, and supports international peacekeeping efforts.
As Europe grapples with the ripple effects of instability in Africa, Italy’s engagement in Somalia reflects a strategic move to curb migration flows, safeguard trade routes, and prevent the resurgence of transnational terrorism.
