The Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) and the National Commission for Food and Nutrition (NCDA), is urging the people of Rwanda to play an active role in maintaining the quality of fruits and vegetables. Currently, the awareness campaign is taking place in the Rubavu District, focusing on encouraging citizens to avoid consuming substandard food.

The quality of fruits and vegetables is crucial in preventing diseases and ensuring good health. RSB states that when farmers, traders, and consumers do not pay attention to the quality of fruits and vegetables, it can have serious consequences on public health. People are encouraged to purchase and consume fruits and vegetables that meet quality standards in order to fight diseases that can be caused by substandard food.

Athanase Ukoyagize, a resident of Gisenyi, emphasized the importance of paying attention to how vegetables are handled and prepared. He said, “When vegetables spoil, they become like poison; eating them can lead to stomach problems and other health issues.” This highlights the risks that arise when citizens fail to care for the quality of fruits and vegetables.
Mukamihigo Agnes, a market vendor in Gisenyi, also pointed out how the preparation of vegetables can impact health. She said, “To get good cassava leaves, we clean them thoroughly and add the necessary spices. Eating them if not properly prepared can cause problems for the person who consumes them.” This reminds us of the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and food preparation practices to avoid health issues caused by poor nutrition.

Rwabutogo Jeanne, a trader in Gisenyi’s market, explained that she follows RSB’s guidelines and participates in training sessions organized by the relevant authorities to maintain the quality of her products. She said, “The ‘Kwihaza’ program is great because, as fruit traders in Rwanda, we are now able to get fresh fruits during their harvest season and ensure they reach our customers in good condition.” Jeanne’s statement shows that fruit and vegetable traders have a responsibility to ensure the quality of their products so that they remain safe for consumption and provide nutritional value.
Karigirwa Rehema, a farmer and trader in Gisenyi, highlighted how maintaining the quality of fruits and vegetables adds value to products. She said, “The quality of fruits and vegetables is crucial. Following quality standards increases the value of the products.” She praised how this focus on quality had enabled her to supply high-end hotels, including Serena Hotel, with quality fruits and vegetables. This demonstrates that paying attention to food quality can improve business and create better market opportunities.
Hakizimana Bella Naivasha, an employee of RSB working in the “Zamukana Ubuziranenge” program, said that neglecting the quality of fruits and vegetables can have serious consequences on people’s health. She explained that strict quality standards have been put in place to assist the entire food supply chain, from the farm to the consumer’s plate. She said, “Our work in the food supply chain aims to preserve the produce from the farm to the final consumer, including those looking to add value.”

Although most people understand the importance of fruits in preventing diseases, some still face challenges such as misconceptions or high prices, making it difficult for some households to purchase fruits regularly. RSB, MINAGRI, and NCDA are encouraging the public to continue supporting initiatives to promote food quality and hygiene for both fruits and vegetables.
