Pope Francis Honored in a Solemn Farewell, Laid to Rest in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

After a special farewell Mass held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the body of Pope Francis was carried through the streets of Rome toward the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where he was laid to rest near the renowned image of the Virgin Mary, *Salus Populi Romani*, a symbol of love and protection for all people.

More than 150,000 people filled the streets, gathered in silence and reverence, bringing flowers, candles, and flags from all over the world. Many had tears in their eyes as they bid farewell to the Pope, known as a global ambassador of peace, unity, and justice. On the Sunday before his passing, he had appeared in St. Peter’s Square, where he offered words full of love and hope, promising the crowd that he would keep them in his prayers.

The funeral procession passed through historically significant Christian landmarks, including Piazza Venezia, the Roman Forum, and the Colosseum—places where Pope Francis had previously spoken powerful messages against self-centered economic systems, calling instead for an economy of peace and inclusion.

Upon reaching the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, his casket was lifted before the crowd and placed before the revered image of the Virgin Mary. The gathered faithful sang hymns, prayed, and wept in silence, reflecting the unity of the global Church in honoring its spiritual leader.

At 1:00 p.m., the burial ceremony began, led by Cardinal Camerlengo, conducted with dignity and transparency according to the Church’s formal rites for papal funerals. His casket was placed in a sacred space between the Sforza Chapel and the Pauline Chapel, within the basilica’s hallowed grounds.

Pope Francis now rests near *Salus Populi Romani*, an image deeply venerated by the Catholic Church, and one he personally visited often before and after his apostolic journeys. Though his earthly journey has ended with great honor, a new legacy begins—one that will be remembered for generations.

The ceremony became a symbol of love, unity, and reverence, leaving the world with the memory of a leader who served all without distinction of wealth, nationality, or belief. His legacy will continue to bring comfort and inspire a new path in a world still struggling with division and strife.
