Rayon Sports Football Club has issued a statement expressing anger and sadness following the suspension of their match against Bugesera FC, which was abandoned due to chaos caused by their fans who were unhappy with the officiating. The match, held at Bugesera Stadium on Saturday, May 17, 2025, was stopped before full time after stones were thrown onto the pitch, creating a security threat.
In the statement released on Sunday, Rayon Sports said the events that occurred were contrary to the core values of football, which include fair play, respect, and adherence to the rules of the game. The club also emphasized that, as one of the leading teams in Rwanda, it is committed to working with relevant authorities to find sustainable solutions that will promote the development of Rwandan sports.
The club’s management called for firm and effective measures to be put in place to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The statement concluded with: “We will continue to contribute to building a football culture free of controversy, rooted in transparency, cooperation, and sustainable development.”
The disturbances drew widespread attention after Rayon Sports fans stormed the pitch and threw stones in protest against refereeing decisions, forcing the match to be called off for safety reasons.
