Zimbabwe began to settle into the game around the 15th minute, and in the 18th minute, Bethel Kondo equalized with a well-taken free kick just outside the penalty area.

Both teams continued with a more cautious approach, focusing on midfield play and sharing scoring opportunities. In the 40th minute, Rwanda was awarded a free kick taken by Gikundiro Scholastique, but Zimbabwean goalkeeper Cotilida Chilinda handled it comfortably.

The first half ended with the teams tied at 1-1.

In the second half, Rwanda came out strong once again. In the 51st minute, Gisubizo Claudette scored Rwanda’s second goal. Zimbabwe increased their attacking efforts around the 60th minute in search of an equalizer, but Rwanda’s defense held firm.

Both sides made substitutions: Zimbabwe brought in more forwards, while Rwanda’s coach Casa Mbungo introduced players to strengthen the defense and protect the lead.

The match ended 2-1 in favor of Rwanda. The return leg is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2025, and will also take place at Kigali Pelé Stadium, as Zimbabwe does not currently have a FIFA-approved stadium.
