The Accounting Profession Expected to Accelerate Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area

Obadiah Biraro called for professional accountants to play a key role in the implementation of AfCFTA.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors at ICPAR, Obadiah Biraro, stated that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is achievable, but it will require the involvement of professional accountants to address the challenges hindering the continent’s integration. He made this statement during the closing of the African Congress of Accountants (ACOA 2025), held in Kigali from May 6 to 9.

Biraro said, “The African Continental Free Trade Area is possible, but it will take time. Therefore, professional accountants must contribute to accelerating the resolution of these challenges.” He emphasized that Africa’s integration must be rooted in shared interests and solving the common obstacles to trade.

Keto Kayemba, President of PAFA, reminded participants that the accounting profession must support sustainable solutions. “Accountants, prepare yourselves beyond expectations, and think about building sustainability,” she said.

The ACOA 2025 conference highlighted the irreplaceable role of the accounting profession in building a united, developed, and sustainable Africa.

The event gathered more than 2,000 participants from 65 countries and featured discussions on the role of the accounting profession in advancing sustainable development, under the theme “Creating Value for Africa.”
