The United States has issued a warning to its citizens advising them not to travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to the ongoing security issues in Kinshasa, including attacks on various embassies. These attacks occurred following the capture of Goma by M23 rebels, along with protests aimed at opposing the takeover of the city.
The U.S. government also recalled some embassy staff due to the rise in armed robbery, looting, and the disruption of public safety. These incidents followed attacks on embassies, where armed perpetrators engaged in theft, murder, and home invasions. The DRC police have been unable to prevent these activities, leading the U.S. to advise its citizens to remain in their home country until the security situation improves.
Belgium also issued a similar advisory to its citizens, urging them to carefully assess travel to DRC due to the unstable security situation in both eastern Congo and the capital, Kinshasa.
Meanwhile, the Kinshasa government quickly prohibited further protests, with police and military forces clashing with those attempting to demonstrate in an effort to restore order.
