Turahirwa Moses, a Rwandan fashion designer and CEO of the fashion house Moshions, has been sentenced by the Kicukiro Primary Court to 30 days of provisional detention, as investigations into the charges against him continue.
On Friday, May 9, 2025, the court delivered its verdict following a hearing that took place on May 6. The prosecution had requested that Moses be remanded in custody for 30 days, arguing that there were serious grounds to believe he committed the offenses of transporting, storing, and using marijuana.
The prosecution stated that there was substantial evidence implicating Moses and that allowing him to remain free during the investigation could interfere with the process or lead to the destruction of evidence.
On the other hand, Moses and his legal counsel argued that he should be allowed to remain free while being investigated, explaining that his drug use was a result of psychological issues and severe depression he was experiencing. They also noted that he had already started receiving treatment from mental health professionals.
Moses further stated that his work significantly contributes to the country’s development through the fashion industry, and that detaining him could hinder his efforts and role in nation-building.
After considering both sides, the court ruled that the arguments presented by Moses were not sufficient to warrant his release during the investigation, and ordered that he be detained for 30 days.
The court also stated that Turahirwa has the right to appeal this decision within five days, should he choose to contest the ruling
