Kwibuka Cricket Tournament: A Symbol of Healing, Unity, and Global Solidarity

As Rwanda hosts the 11th edition of the Kwibuka International Cricket Tournament, the event has grown far beyond just a sporting competition it has become a global symbol of remembrance, healing, and unity through sport.

Held in memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, this year’s tournament brings together nine nations from four continents, each not only competing for a trophy but also standing in solidarity with Rwanda’s painful past. Participating countries include Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Sierra Leone showcasing the global reach and emotional depth of this tournament.

The full match schedule of the tournament

The opening day on June 2nd was marked by more than just sportsmanship. Players and coaches attended a powerful session on Rwanda’s history, led by Col. Migambi Désire, who detailed how the genocide was orchestrated and executed. It was a moment of reflection that reminded attendees of the importance of peace, tolerance, and collective memory.

For many of the players, especially the young Rwandan team led by Captain Bimenyimana Marie Diane, the tournament is about more than winning. “We want the cup to stay home,” she said. “But more than that, we play to honor our past and show the resilience of our people.”

The captain of Rwanda’s national women’s team, Bimenyimana, promised Rwandans to bring them joy during this tournament.

Byiringiro Emmanuel, Head of Operations at the Rwanda Cricket Federation, echoed her sentiment: “The goal is not just victory it’s about remembering, healing, and showing the world how sport can bring people together.”

With opening matches between Rwanda and Cameroon, and Nigeria versus Zimbabwe, the spirit of competition is alive but it’s the spirit of unity that truly defines this tournament.
