Rusizi: Security Authorities Foil Attempt to Steal National Flag

Local authorities in Gikundamvura Sector, Rusizi District, have arrested a 63-year-old man named Bwarikera Bonaventure, who is suspected of attempting to damage the national flag.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2025, in Ituze Village, Kizura Cell, when the suspect arrived at the cell office carrying a machete and a bottle of beer. He cut the rope of the Rwandan flag with the machete, took the flag, and attempted to flee, but was immediately apprehended by security officers.

Sector authorities stated that the suspect is known for displaying inappropriate behavior when intoxicated, often making derogatory statements against the country and its leadership.

Bwarikera is set to be handed over to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at the Muganza station for further investigation into the suspected offenses.

Authorities reminded citizens that the national flag is a symbol of sovereignty and independence, urging them to continue respecting and taking pride in the country’s national symbols.
