Samia Suluhu Hassan re-elected as President of Tanzania with 97.66% of the vote

Tanzania’s National Electoral Commission has announced that Samia Suluhu Hassan has won the presidential election with 97.66% of the votes. This victory secures her another five-year term after first assuming office in 2021, following the passing of the late President John Pombe Magufuli.

According to the Commission, President Samia received more than 31.9 million votes out of about 32 million cast. Voter turnout stood at 87%, with 37.6 million registered voters across the country.

Following the announcement of the results, some areas of the country experienced protests from groups dissatisfied with the outcome. Security forces said they took measures to prevent further unrest and advised residents to remain indoors to maintain public safety.

Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, stated that the disturbances were limited and occurred only in a few areas, describing them as isolated incidents involving criminal elements. He emphasized that security agencies acted appropriately in addressing the situation.

Samia Suluhu Hassan, 65, has been credited for maintaining Tanzania’s development trajectory and continuing policies that promote economic growth and social welfare since taking office.
