In a press briefing held on February 9, 2026, during the launch of the Judicial Anti-Corruption Week, the Military Prosecutor General, Col. Charles Sumanyi, provided updates on the case of Brig. Gen. Ezechiel Gakwerere.
Col. Sumanyi stated that Brig. Gen. Gakwerere, a former high-ranking FDLR commander, possesses vital intelligence regarding the group’s historical and ongoing operations. Consequently, he remains under interrogation.
“Security agencies are still questioning him,” Col. Sumanyi noted. “In the near future, he will be handed over to the military justice system. As our trials are public, those interested will be able to follow the proceedings.”
On March 1, 2025, Rwandan security forces at the “La Corniche” border post received FDLR fighters captured by AFC/M23. Among the group of 14 fighters was Brig. Gen. Jean Baptiste Gakwerere, the FDLR Secretary General.
Upon his arrival in Rubavu at the time, Brig. Gen. Ezechiel Gakwerere admitted to being a lifelong member of the FDLR, stating, “I was captured recently.” He is suspected of involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, specifically as a leader of the ‘New Formula’ unit, which is accused of orchestrating killings at various roadblocks in Butare.
