Mufti of Rwanda Urges Unity and Peace Amid Ongoing Global Conflicts

As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, the Mufti of Rwanda, Sheikh Musa Sindayigaya, has called on Rwandans and the global community not to confuse these military confrontations with religious beliefs. He emphasized the importance of promoting peace and unity instead of fueling divisions based on faith.

Speaking in an interview with RBA, Sheikh Sindayigaya clarified that the tensions between nations should not be interpreted as religious wars. He pointed out that these conflicts are largely rooted in political, economic, and geopolitical interests, not an attack on any particular religion or group of believers.

He highlighted that the Middle East is a region of global significance due to its economic resources, energy reserves, and geopolitical influence. Therefore, conflicts in that area often have far-reaching consequences beyond the borders of the countries involved. This, he said, should motivate people to pursue peace rather than reacting emotionally to situations that may not concern them directly.

Sheikh Sindayigaya also reminded the public that the tension between Iran and Israel has been ongoing for many years, with both sides accusing each other of threatening regional stability. He cited Iran’s nuclear development program and Israel’s preventive strikes as contributing factors to the ongoing hostilities.

The Islamic leader in Rwanda urged everyone—especially the youth—to be critical of the information they consume, to analyze global events carefully, and to avoid falling into divisive narratives based on religion.

As of June 22, 2025, the conflict reached a new peak when the United States launched major airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Despite the escalation, there remains hope for peace. On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to a ceasefire request, following Iran’s retaliatory attacks on American bases in Qatar.

The Mufti concluded by calling on followers of all faiths to continue praying for peace and to resist the politicization of religion. He stressed the need for people to maintain their faith without being influenced by political conflicts or provocations.

While some voices on social media have attempted to frame the conflict as religious, the leadership of the Muslim community in Rwanda warned against such narratives, stating they can mislead people and fuel unnecessary divisions. The Mufti urged vigilance, unity, and peaceful coexistence among people of all beliefs.
