Burundi Demonstrates That Investing in Public Health Yields Tangible Results

Burundi’s success in eliminating trachoma as a public health problem has demonstrated that sustained investment in public health, hygiene, and sanitation plays a critical role in changing the trajectory of diseases that disproportionately affect the poor. After more than 20 years of dedicated efforts to combat the disease, the World Health Organization confirmed that trachoma is no longer a public health issue in Burundi.

Trachoma is a disease caused by a bacterium that spreads easily among populations lacking access to clean water and adequate sanitation. It is one of the neglected tropical diseases that mainly affect people living in rural and underserved areas. The fact that Burundi managed to eliminate it shows the importance of prioritizing health-protective infrastructure—such as clean water, sanitation facilities, and accessible healthcare—more than ever before.

This achievement was made possible through collaboration among various stakeholders, including the government, non-governmental organizations, international partners, and the communities themselves, who played an active role in implementing health programs and awareness campaigns.

This level of cooperation led to tangible improvements in people’s lives, particularly in areas that had been most affected by the disease. Health centers began distributing approved medications, launched hygiene and nutrition awareness programs, and built infrastructure to address the lack of clean water and sanitary toilets.
