Rubavu: Undisclosed Loan Sparks Plot to Kill Husband

In Kitarimwa Village, Gikombe Cell, Nyakiriba Sector in Rubavu District, a woman has been arrested for allegedly plotting to have her husband killed following domestic conflicts that arose after she took out a bank loan without informing him.

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) reported that the plot was orchestrated by the woman in collaboration with two other individuals. However, the plan was foiled through coordinated efforts between RIB and other partner institutions. The three suspects — the 41-year-old woman, a 36-year-old man, and a 34-year-old woman — were arrested on June 27, 2025.

According to RIB spokesperson Dr. Thierry Murangira, the dispute stemmed from property-related issues, particularly the woman’s decision to secure a bank loan without her husband’s knowledge, which reportedly caused serious tension in the household. She is said to have agreed to pay 500,000 Rwandan Francs to have her husband eliminated.

RIB stated that the plan was uncovered through its regular crime detection mechanisms, leading to an operation that prevented the crime and resulted in the arrest of all involved parties.

According to information from IGIHE, the suspects are currently detained at the RIB station in Gisenyi as their case file has been prepared and will be forwarded to the Prosecution on July 7, 2025. Under Article 20 of Law No. 68/2018 of August 30, 2018, which outlines offences and penalties in general, conspiring to commit a crime carries the same penalty as the intended offence—in this case, conspiracy to commit murder can result in a life sentence.

RIB has urged the public to avoid resolving domestic disputes through violence and instead seek legal and peaceful means. The institution also reminded citizens that planning or committing any crime is punishable by law and that anyone involved will be apprehended and brought to justice.
