LONDON – Muhammadu Buhari, former President of Nigeria and one of the country’s most prominent politicians and military figures, has died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, where he had been receiving medical treatment, according to confirmation from his family and close associates.
Bashir Ahmad, Buhari’s former Special Assistant on Digital Communications, announced the news on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon at a clinic in London.”
Buhari, aged 82, served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023. He came to power after defeating the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan, in the 2015 elections marking the first peaceful transition of power from a sitting president in the country’s history. He was re-elected for a second term in 2019.
During his two terms, President Buhari was known for his strong stance against corruption and for leading efforts to combat the terrorist group Boko Haram in the country’s northeast. His administration also prioritized infrastructure development and agricultural reforms aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency.
However, his tenure was also marred by significant challenges, including persistent insecurity, periods of economic recession, and rising unemployment. His government faced criticism over issues related to governance and human rights.
Muhammadu Buhari leaves behind a significant legacy in Nigeria’s leadership—both as a military ruler who took power in 1983 following a coup, and as a democratically elected president decades later
