Central African Region Accounts for 90% of Mpox Cases as Outbreak Intensifies

SINCE the beginning of mpox outbreak this year, the Central African Region accounts for 90 percent of all cases reported.
This is revealed during the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) weekly media press briefing on Friday focussed on multi-country pox outbreak in Africa.
The Africa CDC further adds that since the beginning of the outbreak this year, a total of 32, 407 cases recorded of which 6, 441 were confirmed and 840 deaths have been reported.


“There is over 194 percent increase this year compared to the same time in 2023,’’ the press statement released after the briefing states.
In the epi week number 37, a total of 2910 new cases were notified, 436 were new confirmed cases while 16 new deaths were recorded.
It is reported that a total of 102 deaths were reported in the Epi week 37 of which 86 deaths are backlog.


There has been an observed increase in cases since July (week 27) in Eastern and Central while the Western region also peaked last month.
Cases are steadily increasing across all affected countries while distribution of vaccine doses to affected countries including Rwanda, South Africa CAR, BurundI, and Cameroon
