Minister Mukazayire says Amavubi will continue to be supported to build a strong national team

After the match between Rwanda and Benin on October 10, 2025, in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire, stated that although Amavubi did not win, the journey to build a strong team is still ongoing and that Rwandans should not lose hope.

The match ended with Rwanda losing 1–0 after a defensive error gave Benin the opportunity to score. This result disappointed many Rwandans, especially since the match was attended by a large number of fans, including the Head of State, His Excellency President Paul Kagame, who was present to support the national team, Amavubi.

In her message after the match, Minister Mukazayire said that even though the team did not achieve its goal in this game, the preparations for upcoming competitions are continuing.

She said: “Today we didn’t achieve the result we wanted and were capable of achieving. But that doesn’t mean it ends here. There is another way things can be done, and it will be done.”

The Minister thanked the fans who came in large numbers, encouraging them to remain patient and continue supporting the team, noting that there are ongoing efforts aimed at building a strong and sustainable national team.

She added: “For our national team, Amavubi, we are not abandoning our plans, but we are changing the approach. This is a time to increase our efforts and keep working, because what we want is possible, but it requires dedication.”

She concluded by emphasizing that Rwanda must continue on the path of pursuing development through supporting talent, patriotism, and resilience in the journey toward success.

This match has led some analysts to revisit the issues still affecting the national team, including the lack of a capable coach who can bring the team together, the inconsistency in team selection, and the absence of a long-term development plan focused on young players.
