Zanzibar and Mombasa Among the New Routes RwandAir Will Operate

RwandAir, Rwanda’s national carrier, has taken another significant step in expanding its operations in East Africa by launching new flights to Zanzibar and resuming flights to Mombasa, which had been suspended in 2019.

On December 1, 2025, RwandAir began operating the Kigali–Zanzibar–Mombasa route four times a week (on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday), using a Boeing B737 aircraft.

These new flights will greatly benefit passengers who previously had to pass through Dar es Salaam before continuing their trip to Zanzibar using other non-air transport options. Restoring the Mombasa route and adding Zanzibar will bring the number of RwandAir destinations to three in Tanzania and two in Kenya.

RwandAir CEO, Yvonne Makolo, said that reopening these routes is part of the airline’s strategy to strengthen its network and offer passengers more travel and business opportunities within the region.

This aligns with the Government’s five-year development plan, which includes increasing RwandAir destinations and doubling the number of passengers the airline carries.
