APR Women’s APR WBBC Reclaim Bronze at WBAL 2025
APR Women’s Basketball Club secured the bronze medal at the 2025 FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball League after defeating Senegal’s ASC Ville de Dakar 90–84 in the third-place playoff decided in overtime.
The match was played at the Prince Abdallah Al Faisal Sports Hall in Cairo, Egypt, which hosted the continental tournament. Both teams started the game at a high tempo, each showing a strong desire to win. The first quarter ended with ASC Ville de Dakar leading 26–24.
In the second quarter, the game remained tightly contested, with the two sides trading baskets. In the final minutes before halftime, ASC Ville de Dakar managed to open a small gap through Julie Dacosta and Couna Ndao, going into the break with a 48–42 lead.
APR WBBC returned in the third quarter with renewed energy, cutting the deficit through Destiney Promise Philoxy and Assouma Uwizeye. The scores were tied at 61–61, but ASC Ville de Dakar regained a narrow lead before the end of the quarter. Despite APR winning the period, the Senegalese side remained ahead 69–68.
In the final quarter, APR WBBC took the lead, with Philoxy helping her team move ahead 76–72. ASC Ville de Dakar mounted a late comeback, reducing the gap to 84–83. With seconds remaining, Aliyah Matharu converted one free throw to level the score at 84–84, sending the game into overtime.
In the additional five minutes, APR WBBC dominated the contest, showing composure and control. Destiney Promise Philoxy once again led her teammates with crucial points, as APR WBBC closed out the game 90–84.
This result saw APR WBBC reclaim the bronze medal they had also won in 2024, reinforcing their status as one of Rwanda’s strongest representatives on the African stage.
