Veteran actress Joke Silva has challenged the perception of Nollywood as a regional industry, asserting that its true audience spans the entire global Black population. Speaking as the Head Judge for the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards during the Icons Night held on Thursday, May 7, Silva expressed profound pride in the quality of this year’s entries, noting that the industry continues to produce exceptional work despite significant budgetary limitations.

The volume and quality of work we reviewed made me immensely proud of Nollywood, Silva stated. She expressed a mix of pride and concern, noting that while the quality of work is impressive, she remains heartbroken that there are still not enough platforms and spaces to properly showcase the incredible work being produced. I believe that if the rest of the world truly understood the limitations under which we create, they would salute us a million times over, she added.
Addressing the issue of distribution, Silva argued that the industry must look beyond regional borders and challenged the belief that distribution problems are tied only to local affordability. Our audience is not just Nigeria, our audience is not just West Africa, our audience is not only the African continent, she said. Our audience is the entire Black race, well over a billion people across the world, and I believe this deeply. She emphasized that African storytelling provides a vital platform for Blackness to be seen fully and humanly, showing that we are good, flawed, beautiful, complicated, and extraordinary.
Silva also addressed industry partners directly, praying that the reality of their global impact is fully understood. We give Black people pride and we tell stories without unnecessary baggage, she noted. As the industry prepares for the AMVCA 12 main awards ceremony on Friday, May 9, Silva urged filmmakers to remain resilient and continue pushing boundaries. She reminded the creative community that they are not just entertaining people but are helping to hold the continent together while reminding humanity of what it is supposed to look like.
Silva concluded by acknowledging the rigorous work of the AMVCA jury, noting that while her title as Head Judge sounds prestigious, the real work was done collectively. The panel spent countless hours watching films and debating performances to make decisions that significantly impact careers. The main ceremony can be watched live on Africa Magic channels on DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv.
