Pilatus Electric Mobility Zambia Limited (PEM), also known as BYD Zambia, has unveiled the BYD Dolphin Surf, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition to clean and sustainable transportation.
The fully electric compact model represents a major leap forward for Zambia’s growing electric vehicle (EV) sector and reinforces the Government’s momentum toward sustainable, low-emission transportation.
It features zero-emission driving, reduced long-term running costs, advanced digital technology, and enhanced safety systems.
The launch of the Dolphin Surf is expected to accelerate Zambia’s adoption of electric vehicles by offering a practical, reliable, and affordable entry point into sustainable mobility.
In recent years, the government has intensified its commitment to climate-smart transportation. Key reforms promoting reduced carbon emissions and increased EV adoption have continued to shape national policy.
This momentum has been strengthened by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, who recently urged government ministries and agencies to begin transitioning to electric vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has also advanced supportive regulatory frameworks aimed at encouraging EV investment, integration, and private-sector participation.
Together, these developments position Zambia as one of Africa’s increasingly competitive destinations for sustainable transport solutions.
Speaking at the launch event in Zambia’s capital Lusaka, PEM and BYD Zambia General Manager, Namwinga Namusamba highlighted that the BYD Dolphin Surf enters the Zambian market as an efficient, modern, and affordable electric model suited for urban lifestyles.
She expressed confidence that the Dolphin Surf will attract both individual and corporate buyers seeking innovative, environmentally friendly mobility options.
“Combining practicality, innovation, and affordability, the Dolphin Surf offers: Zero-emission driving for a cleaner Zambia Lower running costs and outstanding energy efficiency Modern digital features and advanced safety systems,” she added.
Officiating at the launch, Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa said the Zambian Government has placed high priority on sustainable development, energy efficiency, and the modernization of the country’s transport ecosystem.
“As part of this commitment, I have recently encouraged government ministries, agencies, and the broader public to begin actively adopting electric vehicles”
“This call is rooted in three realities: Electric mobility reduces operational and fuel costs, it creates economic opportunities in new industries, and it is central to building a resilient, climate-smart Zambia. The transition to EVs is not a trend, it is a strategic national response to global change,” Mr. Kangwa stated.
He said the launch of the BYD Dolphin Surf reinforces that Zambia is already moving firmly in the right direction.
“BYD is a global leader in electric mobility. Their confidence in the Zambian market signals international recognition of our stable policy direction, our growing middle class, and our national commitment to sustainability,” he added.
Industry observers said the vehicle’s arrival signals growing consumer interest in EVs and underscores the country’s readiness to embrace clean automotive technology.
