Côte d’Ivoire and Egypt Crowned Champions at Afrobasket U16 2025 in Kigali

The Afrobasket U16 tournament concluded on Sunday, September 14, 2025, after two weeks of high-level basketball action at Petit Stade in Remera, Kigali. For the first time in the tournament’s history, both boys’ and girls’ competitions were hosted at the same venue.

In the boys’ category, Côte d’Ivoire won their first-ever U16 title after defeating Cameroon 62–49 in a competitive final. The game remained close in the first half, with Côte d’Ivoire leading 23–21 at the break. However, they pulled ahead in the second half with strong performances from Minty Jean-Philippe Dylan Oka and Irené Raphael Ouédraogo, securing the historic win.

On the girls’ side, Egypt claimed the championship with a 66–54 victory over Côte d’Ivoire. Cameroon finished third after narrowly beating Mali 55–53. In the boys’ third-place game, Mali overcame Egypt 58–51.

Host nation Rwanda finished 8th in the boys’ competition and 6th in the girls’ category.

The top two teams from each category earned automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.
