Growing Displacement Crisis in Mogadishu as Government-Led Evictions Intensify

The humanitarian situation in Mogadishu is worsening as forced evictions targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue across the city. Carried out by government authorities, the evictions primarily affect those living in abandoned public buildings, many of whom were already uprooted by conflict, climate shocks, or economic hardship.

With no prior warning or provision of alternative shelter, families are being left homeless once again. The evictions are linked to the government’s decision to sell public land to private investors, a move that has sparked criticism from both local communities and international human rights organizations.

The repeated displacement of vulnerable populations is deepening social and economic strain in Mogadishu. IDPs, who were already living in precarious conditions, now face heightened risks, including exposure to disease, hunger, and exploitation. The lack of a long-term housing strategy and limited access to social protection systems continue to fuel this cycle of instability.

As pressure mounts, rights organizations are urging Somali authorities to prioritize the protection of displaced communities and to implement more inclusive urban development plans that uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens.
