ICGLR RAISES ALARM OVER WORSENING SECURITY, HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN EASTERN DRC

By Cecilia Chiluba/Zambia/Lusaka

International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking during an Extraordinary Meeting of Chiefs of Defence Forces being held in Zambia, ICGLR Executive Secretary, Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa said the regional body is alarmed that, following the signing of the Washington Accord last month, the capture of the town of Uvira has resulted in the mass displacement of people.

Dr. Luwabelwa urged the Chiefs of Defence Forces to find tangible solutions to end the hostilities.

“The conflict has far reaching regional implications,” Dr. Luwabelwa said.

Chiefs of Defence Forces from the 12 ICGLR member states are currently meeting in Livingstone, Zambia, to explore solutions to the worsening security and humanitarian situation in eastern DRC.

Meanwhile, opening the Extraordinary Meeting, Zambia’s Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu reiterated the country’s commitment to finding an amicable solution to the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mr. Haamaundu said Zambia pledges to work tirelessly for peace in the DRC and the wider region.

“We remain dedicated to supporting peace processes, contributing to regional initiatives and hosting platforms for dialogue ad cooperation. We believe that the security of one member state is inseparable from the security of all,” he said.

He urged the Chiefs of Defence Forces to keep in mind the hopes and aspirations of the millions of men, women and children who look up to them for protection.

According to a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala, the three-day meeting is focusing on coordinated regional efforts to restore peace and stability in eastern DRC, a region that has experienced persistent insecurity.
