At the international symposium on Islamic values and their role in promoting peace across Africa, held in Kigali on July 19, 2025, key religious and political leaders underscored how Islamic principles align with inclusive governance and sustainable peace.
Hon. Sheikh Mussa Fazil Harerimana, the Deputy Speaker of Rwanda’s Parliament, emphasized that Rwanda’s governance model reflects Islamic values of justice, equity, and collective responsibility. He noted that leadership in Rwanda is characterized by participation from both leaders and citizens, promoting unity and national development under the stewardship of President Paul Kagame.

Echoing this message, Sheikh Sindayigaya Musa, the Mufti of Rwanda and head of the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema in Rwanda, highlighted Rwanda’s post-genocide transformation as a testament to deliberate choices made by Rwandans to pursue peace, justice, and reconciliation. He stressed that these efforts resonate with the teachings of Islam, which advocates for peace and the protection of human dignity.

Si Mohammed Rifki, the Secretary General of the Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema, also commended Rwanda’s leadership, noting that the strong ties between Morocco and Rwanda are grounded in shared values of peacebuilding and cooperation. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in amplifying Africa’s voice on religious tolerance and mutual respect.
The symposium served as a reminder of how religious values, when rightly interpreted and applied, can support inclusive governance and lasting peace, especially in post-conflict societies like Rwanda.
