Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Sen. Mutahi Kagwe, held a high-level bilateral meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Abubakar Kyari. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 49th Session of the IFAD Governing Council—where Hon. Kyari also serves as Chair—focused on deepening agricultural cooperation between the two nations.
A central point of the discussion was the potential importation of urea fertilizer from Nigeria to support Kenyan farmers. By sourcing urea from Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading producers, Kenya aims to stabilize its fertilizer supply and reduce the high costs and logistical vulnerabilities associated with over-reliance on non-African markets. This move aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework, which seeks to strengthen intra-African trade and build resilient continental value chains.
