Lilongwe Cycling Club has launched a fundraising initiative aimed at supporting children with cancer receiving treatment at Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Malawi.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over challenges facing child cancer patients, particularly food shortages, which have worsened following funding constraints affecting humanitarian support, including assistance previously provided through USAID-supported programs.
Speaking in an interview with Chairperson of Lilongwe Cycling Club Mike Misoya said the club was moved to act after noting the difficult conditions under which children with cancer and their guardians are living during treatment.
He explained that adequate nutrition is critical for children undergoing cancer treatment, yet many patients are struggling to access proper meals, a situation that negatively affects their recovery.
“We believe this initiative will help address some of the challenges these children are facing, especially food shortages. As a club, we felt it was important to contribute towards improving their well-being,” said Misoya .
The Veteran Cyclist, member of Kamuzu Institute for sports Kenneth Chikazinga Banga said they plan to support these children in February when funds have been collected from well wishers.
“We are appealing to well-wishers, individuals, and organizations to support the initiative with financial or material assistance, stressing that every contribution can make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer”,said Banda
Lilongwe Cycling Club is known for using sport-based initiatives to support charitable causes, and the club hopes the campaign will raise both funds and awareness about the needs of children with cancer in Malawi.
