The ruling party in Uganda, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has confirmed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as its candidate for the presidential elections scheduled for 2026. Museveni, who has led Uganda for 39 years, is set to run for an eighth term.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, announced that President Museveni will collect his nomination papers on June 28, 2025. The nomination period will run from June 26 to July 1, with the final list of approved candidates to be published on July 4, 2025.
Museveni, aged 80, came to power in 1986. Since then, he has won elections in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. His upcoming campaign will be for another five-year term.
