RCS Women’s Convention Highlights Role of Technology in Gender Empowerment

Kigali – On August 28, 2025, the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) held its 6th annual Women’s Convention under the theme “Digital Dignity: Upholding Professionalism and Gender Respect.” The event served as a platform to empower female staff within the institution while promoting the integration of technology in professional development.

Commissioner General of RCS, Evariste Murenzi, emphasized that gender equality is not only a national goal but a priority within the RCS itself. He noted that women currently make up 28.5% of the RCS workforce, with active efforts underway to exceed the national target of 30%.

“This convention is about building confidence, skills, and solidarity among women in service,” said CG Murenzi. He called for both men and women to support gender inclusivity, stressing the importance of digital literacy in modern correctional service operations.

Minister of Interior Dr. Vincent Biruta, who also attended the event, echoed the urgency of adapting to technological change. He urged RCS to establish strategies that equip women with digital skills, viewing technology as essential for institutional efficiency and national progress.

The convention brought together women from different correctional units to reflect on workplace challenges, share experiences, and explore opportunities for growth in a digital era. The event also acknowledged the support of partners like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who continue to contribute to capacity-building efforts in the security sector.

As Rwanda continues to lead in gender equity, the RCS is positioning itself as a model institution where professionalism and digital empowerment go hand in hand with inclusive leadership.
