RMC Appointed to Represent the EAC Region in Promoting Independent Media in Africa

The Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) has been entrusted with the responsibility of representing the East African Community (EAC) in the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA), a continental organization of independent media regulatory bodies in Africa.

The decision to assign this role to RMC was made during a continental conference held in Arusha, Tanzania, from July 14 to 16, 2025. The summit brought together independent media institutions from across Africa to exchange ideas on media governance and legal frameworks on the continent.

RMC Appointed to Represent East Africa in the Advancement of Independent Media in Africa

RMC was given the responsibility of representing EAC member states, with the aim of promoting press freedom, collaborating with other institutions in the region, and advancing a media industry that serves the public interest.

The RMC leadership stated that this appointment is a significant opportunity that reflects Rwanda’s meaningful contribution to building a credible and professional media sector capable of addressing challenges related to technology and misinformation.

RMC will coordinate media services among EAC countries, promote accuracy in journalism, and foster collaboration among similar institutions in other African countries.

The conference also highlighted the role of technology in shaping the modern media landscape, noting that limited digital literacy among journalists and the general public is one of the main causes of the spread of misinformation, especially through social media platforms.

Various reports presented during the summit, including one by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), showed that only a small percentage of internet users in Africa—18%—have the necessary skills to critically analyze online content, highlighting the need to strengthen education and capacity in modern journalism.
