Rwanda Men’s Basketball Jumps to 81st in FIBA Rankings Despite Losing Streak

Rwanda’s men’s national basketball team has stunned fans and analysts alike by climbing nine places in the latest FIBA World Rankings, reaching 81st in the world. This marks the biggest jump of any nation in the update released on December 2, 2025.

The unexpected rise comes despite a challenging year on the court. Since February 2025, Rwanda has lost all six of its FIBA-recognized games, including their recent performance in Window 1 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers in Rades, Tunisia, where they went 0–3.

Despite these setbacks, Rwanda’s total of 127.4 ranking points was enough to place the team 13th in Africa and maintain third place in Zone V, trailing only South Sudan and Egypt. Analysts caution that this leap may be short-lived, as only two African Qualifiers groups have played so far. Groups B and D are scheduled to begin their campaigns in February 2026, which could bring significant shifts in continental standings.

On the African continent, South Sudan continues to lead the rankings, followed by reigning African champions Angola. Globally, the United States retains the top spot after two victories over Nicaragua in the Americas Qualifiers, while Germany, the 2023 World Cup and EuroBasket 2025 champion, remains second following wins against Israel and Cyprus.

Rwanda’s last victory in an official FIBA competition was in February 2025, when they defeated Gabon during the final window of AfroBasket qualifiers. While the current ranking provides a morale boost, experts note that tangible success on the court is essential for Rwanda to maintain and improve its global standing.
