Senegal national team wins the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) after briefly walking off the pitch

The Senegal national team, which had earlier walked off the pitch following a disagreement with the referee, went on to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) in the final match played this Sunday at 9:00 p.m. at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The match started at a very fast pace, with both teams pushing to score an early goal. At one point, Senegal’s Iliman Ndiaye found himself one-on-one with the goal, but Yassine Bono made a crucial save.
In the 14th minute, Morocco’s Ismael Saibari received a good ball that he could have converted, but his shot went wide of the goal.

Both teams made substitutions, but the deadlock persisted. In the 90+7th minute, Morocco were awarded a penalty after Malick Diouf committed a foul on Brahim Diaz by pulling him inside the penalty area.

Senegal players were unhappy with the penalty decision and initially refused to allow it to be taken, even going into the dressing room at the instruction of their coach.

There was serious disagreement, and Senegal supporters damaged some parts of the stadium.
With the involvement of Sadio Mané, the players returned to the pitch and the penalty was eventually taken. Brahim Diaz stepped up to take it, but goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved it.

The 90 minutes of regular time ended in a 0–0 draw, leading to 30 minutes of extra time. In the 94th minute, Senegal broke the deadlock through a goal scored by Pape Gueye, assisted by Idrissa Gana Gueye.

The match ended with Senegal winning 1–0 and lifting the Africa Cup of Nations trophy (AFCON 2025), which was held in Morocco. This is the second AFCON title in Senegal’s history, after their first triumph in 2021.
