The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be used in the national team playoff matches for the 2026 World Cup qualification.
These matches are scheduled to take place in Morocco on November 13, 2025, featuring four African teams: the Democratic Republic of Congo will face Cameroon at El Barid, while Nigeria will play Gabon at the Complexe Sportif Hértier Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Both matches will be held in the city of Rabat.
CAF stated that the use of VAR will help ensure accurate decision-making and improve officiating, aiming to eliminate errors that could lead to disputes over scores or match outcomes.
The winning teams from these playoff matches will meet in a final, where the two teams that come out on top will secure their spots in the 2026 World Cup.
