ZAMBIA BEGINS ONION IMPORTS TO STABILIZE SUPPLY AS PRODUCTION GAPS EMERGE

By Cecilia Chiluba/Zambia/Lusaka

Fruit and Vegetable Traders Association of Zambia says the country is experiencing reduced production levels of key horticultural commodities, particularly onions and potatoes, due to seasonal constraints.

Association Chairperson Bernard Sikunyongana disclosed in an interview that government authorized the importation of onions in early March as a mitigation measure to address supply shortages and stabilize market prices.

Mr. Sikunyongana explained that onion production is typically affected during the rainy season, making it difficult for farmers to meet domestic demand.

“To avoid a supply gap that could trigger sharp price increases, the border was opened to allow imports of approximately 5,000 metric tonnes per month over an initial two-month period,” he disclosed.

He added that authorities will review the situation after two months and may extend the import window depending on local production levels.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sikunyongana revealed that the country is also facing a shortage of potatoes, with plans underway to open import channels in the second week of April to prevent potential price spikes.

On price movements, he noted that most fruits and vegetables have remained relatively stable due to the government’s intervention.

Mr. Sikunyongana said onion and potato prices have been contained, while tomato prices have recorded a slight increase in recent weeks.

“Tomato prices have edged upwards, but this follows a prolonged period of low prices observed since December. The current levels remain within a normal range,” Mr. Sikunyongana added.

He emphasized that importation plays a critical role in regulating market prices by preventing excessive price hikes among traders.
