ZAMBIA’s religious community is taking proactive steps to ensure peace and stability ahead of the 2026 general elections. The Zambia Interfaith Networking Group (ZINGO) and HWPL, an international peace NGO, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for peace cooperation in Lusaka on February 4, this year.

This partnership aims to promote interfaith unity, peace, and social cohesion, particularly among youth.
Zambia’s reputation as a leading example of democracy and peace in Africa is at stake, and religious leaders are determined to maintain social stability and unity under the national value of “One Zambia, One Nation.” However, election periods often bring political differences to the surface, making societies vulnerable to tensions and divisions. By signing the MOU, ZINGO and HWPL are presenting religion as a standard for unity rather than division.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to channel the heightened social energy of the election season toward constructive civic participation, setting a benchmark for a peaceful and inclusive electoral culture. ZINGO has long facilitated dialogue between religious leaders, government institutions, and civil society, and this partnership is seen as a starting point for public-private peace cooperation.
The core principles of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) will be implemented in Zambia’s local context, emphasizing freedom of religion, respect for identity, and spreading a culture of peace through education. Sheikh Ali Musa Ayami praised the partnership, stating that faith can be a force for unity when guided by wisdom and sincerity.
The event drew strong national attention, with government officials, education sector representatives, and media present. Young people, future leaders of the nation, witnessed the signing ceremony, symbolizing the resolve of today’s leaders to pass on a safe, stable, and prosperous nation to the next generation.
Practical cooperation between ZINGO and HWPL includes peace education for preschool children and local youth, promoting interfaith understanding through initiatives like the International Religious Peace Academy (IRPA), and community-level peacebuilding. An HWPL Zambia Branch representative stated that Zambia’s commitment to peace can serve as a model for the global community.
This partnership sends a powerful message that faith can be a force for unity, not separation. As Zambia prepares for the 2026 elections, ZINGO and HWPL are working together to ensure peace takes root in everyday life, promoting a culture of mutual respect, social harmony, and national stability.
The collaboration is a significant step towards embedding a mature culture of peace in Zambia, and its impact is expected to be felt beyond the country’s borders. With the united efforts of religious leaders, government institutions, and youth, sustainable peace is within reach.
