ZAMBIA MOBILIZES US$1.82 BILLION, SEEKS US$3.98 BILLION MORE TO STRENGTHEN WATER SECURITY

By Cecilia Chiluba/Zambia/Lusaka

Zambia’s Vice President Mutale Nalumango says the country is seeking US$3.98 billion in global investment to bolster water security initiatives and drive socio-economic growth.

According to Mrs. Nalumanog, the nation has demonstrated its commitment to advancing water security by mobilizing US$1.82 billion for the Zambia Water Investment Programme.

She said these efforts are expected to enhance access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Delivering her remarks at the World Government Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Vice President called for a binding global water governance framework and reforms to international financial architecture, unlocking blended finance opportunities for water investments, particularly ahead of the pivotal 2026 UN Water Conference.

She underscored Zambia’s proactive stance on advancing water security, positioning it as a key driver of economic transformation and sustainable development.

“Water security remains central to Zambia’s economic transformation agenda, underpinning agriculture, energy generation, public health, and climate resilience,” she reaffirmed.

Mrs. Nalumango said water security is a key driver of national development, regional stability and global cooperation.

She further emphasized Zambia’s One Government Approach, which integrates water governance across all key sectors and strengthens decentralization to ensure that solutions are locally driven and climate‑responsive.

The Vice President stressed that global commitments must translate into measurable improvements on the ground and called for predictable financing, technical support aligned with national systems, and clear accountability mechanisms to track delivery.

Mrs. Nalumango noted the importance of derisking water investments, integrating climate and water finance, strengthening national data systems, and enhancing regional cooperation, particularly across shared river basins-to build long‑term resilience.

She invited all partners and delegates to participate in the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, where Zambia will co‑chair the Interactive Dialogue on Water for Cooperation alongside Finland.

The World Government Summit is a high-level global platform that convenes leaders and experts to discuss emerging governance models and innovative approaches to public administration.

Themed “Shaping Future Governments,” the Summit focuses on international cooperation, technological advancement, sustainability and economic growth.

This is according to a statement issued by Press Aide to the Vice President of Zambia, Njenje Chizu.
