ZAMBIA RECALLS SELECTED EYE DROPS MANUFACTURED BY ZIMBABWEAN, INDIAN COMPANIES

By Cecilia Chiluba/Zambia/Lusaka

Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has recalled specific batches of eye drops solution manufactured by some companies from India and Zimbabwe.

The recall targets two batches found non-compliant with selected laboratory tests for quality.

Batch LAHLE03629 of Olopatadine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP 0.1% (5ml), made in India, and batch LHLE03628 of Brinzolamide Ophthalmic Suspension USP 1% (5ml), made in Zimbabwe, are affected.

ZAMRA Director General, Makomani Siyanga stated in a public health alert that initial tests observed minimal differences from other batches.

In the announcement issued to retailers, health workers, and the general public, Siyanga noted that further investigations by the Authority are ongoing to establish the source of the products.

“Deltaprim Tablets were observed to have tiny brownish spots as opposed to being white, and some tablets were observed to have chipped edges or broken, which would therefore affect accurate dosing and consequently the required amount of drug per tablet.”

“Further, note that Cromohist Eye Drops were observed to be changing from a clear solution to a whitish suspension, affecting the quality and safety of the product,” Siyanga said.

He advised the public against using or selling the affected substandard products in view of the above findings.

“If you are in possession of the above stated products, do not use or sale them. All pharmaceutical outlets and members of the public in possession of these products should place them in quarantine and return them to their suppliers,” he advised.
