Zambia Expands Peace Education: HWPL Signs MOUs with Lusaka Central Schools

MONICA KAYOMBO, Lusaka
Since the successful launch of peace education in Zambia earlier this year, the Peace Education Zonal Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) signing ceremony has marked another significant step toward institutionalizing peace education across the capital.
The event that was recently held at Lusaka Girls Secondary School, brought together headteachers from across the Lusaka Central Zone.

A total of 18 schools participated in the event culminating in the official signing of MOUs between Heavenly World Peace and Light (HWPL) and 11 zonal schools representing the Lusaka Central region. These schools, designated directly by the Lusaka District Education Board, play a leading role in shaping educational practices within their zones and are expected to promote the spread of peace education to schools under their jurisdiction.
The initiative builds upon the momentum from the HWPL Zambia Peace Education Implementation Declaration Ceremony held on April 15, this year where Zambia officially expressed its commitment to including peace education in its national public education system.

The ceremony featured several key segments, beginning with a welcome address by Lusaka Girls Secondary school headteacher Ms Mirriam Chipango, Headteacher followed by a congratulatory message from Mr. Alexander Mulolo, Head of the Lusaka Central Zonal Schools. In his remarks, Mr. Mulolo stated, “By signing this MOU with HWPL, our schools in Lusaka Central are affirming our active participation in a national movement.
” He emphasized the role of schools in peacebuilding, adding, “We believe peace begins in the classroom, and we are proud to make our schools places where peace is learned, lived, and shared.” The program continued with an introduction to HWPL Peace Education by Ms. Minji Ko, Branch Manager of HWPL Zambia.

The headteachers publicly pledged their commitment to peace education and proceeded with the signing of MOUs with HWPL. The event concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Ko, reaffirming HWPL’s commitment to supporting education-led peacebuilding in Zambia.
The Lusaka District Education Board had previously issued official letters expressing its support for peace education and instructing all schools within the city to implement related initiatives.

The Peace Education Zonal MOU Signing Ceremony is expected to serve as a model for other districts, showcasing how peace education can be systematically introduced through local education networks.
HWPL Peace Education, now implemented in 852 schools across 102 countries, fosters global citizens who value harmony, coexistence, and peaceful conflict resolution. With over 2,700 peace educators worldwide, the program continues to grow as a sustainable model for building a culture of peace through education.
