Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe has clarified that the government’s decision to import rice is due to Kenya’s continued shortfall in local production. Kenya has long relied on imports to bridge the gap in demand.
However, he emphasized that the government will prioritize safeguarding local farmers before importation to protect incomes and supporting local production.
“This approach ensures fair pricing, protects consumers, and prevents pressure on other food commodities,” he added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to both food security and farmer livelihoods.
