The Governor of the Western Province, Jean Bosco Ntibitura, told Isango Star that 14 leaders from Nyabihu District, including the Executive Secretary of the District and the Head of Ibuka, have been arrested on suspicion of misusing funds allocated for the rehabilitation of houses for survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
Governor Ntibitura said that these leaders were arrested on Monday night, after being suspected of misconduct in the renovation of 17 houses across seven sectors in Nyabihu.
He said: “They are being questioned about their responsibilities and what they were supposed to oversee, and whether anything was done improperly. Investigations are ongoing, but that issue is what led the competent authorities to begin following up.”
Among those arrested are also social welfare officers and heads of Ibuka in the seven sectors where the houses were to be rehabilitated, as the project used a community approach.
The provincial leadership said each person is being held accountable individually and called on leaders to perform their duties properly and avoid mistakes.
Governor Ntibitura urged citizens not to feel alarmed, assuring them that the services they usually receive will continue. The suspects are currently detained at Jenda Police Station, in Jenda Sector.
