The Zambian Government has charged a Chinese mining firm, approximately US$4,754.49, or K110,000 for non-compliance with the country’s employment laws.
An inspection conducted at Ziquan Mining Limited, in Southern Province, by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security officials, established that employees were operating without formal terms and conditions of service as the firm did not issue the workers with written employment contracts.
The company was also operating without workplace policies, which are required to guide conduct, protect employees, and ensure compliance with labour standards.
“As a result, Ziquan Mining Limited has been sanctioned in line with legal provisions of the Employment Code Act,” Mwaka Ndawa, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Principal Public Relations Officer said.
Ms. Ndawa stated that the Government directed the mining Company to immediately rectify the identified violations and fully comply with statutory requirements as failure to do so will attract further sanctions.
She emphasized that the Ministry will continue to enforce compliance across all sectors to protect workers from unfair labour practices and promote decent work.
