Zambia has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet.
The commitment was made by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Alfred Musemuna, during the High-Level Segment of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).
Speaking on behalf of Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Elton Mposha, Mr. Musemuna reiterated Zambia’s dedication to environmental protection, climate action, and green economic development as central pillars for inclusive and sustainable national transformation.
In his address, the High Commissioner detailed Zambia’s progress in implementing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 under the Paris Agreement.
He outlined the nation’s strategic actions in renewable energy expansion, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable forestry management, and enhancing water security.
“We are scaling up solar energy investments and diversifying our energy mix to strengthen resilience against climate-induced hydrological variability,” he added.
Mr. Musemuna further emphasized Zambia’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, and ecosystem restoration, efforts that align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Addressing the global challenge of plastic pollution, he affirmed Zambia’s support for the development of a legally binding international instrument to end plastic pollution.
Mr. Musemuna noted Zambia’s proactive steps, including the use of the Basel–Rotterdam–Stockholm (BRS) Conventions tool for plastic inventories and the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations since 2018.
He also called for enhanced global progress on environmental goals and the adoption of strong indicators to monitor resilience-building efforts, stressing the importance of integrated approaches.
“UNEA-7 provides us with an opportunity to reaffirm multilateralism, strengthen solidarity, and translate commitments into concrete actions that leave no one behind,” he stated.
“Zambia stands ready to collaborate with all partners to accelerate implementation, scale up ambition, and safeguard a resilient and sustainable planet for present and future generations.”
This is according to a statement jointly issued by the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, and Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Principal Public Relations Officer, Harriet Chimuka.
