The Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, has urged Rwandan youth to take preventive measures against HIV, warning that the virus remains a major threat, with new infections significantly affecting those aged 15 to 25. He delivered this message in Gisenyi Sector, Rubavu District, during a community gathering after Umuganda on November 30, 2024.
He stated: “HIV is still here. Use condoms or abstain. If you fail to take precautionary measures, you will get HIV.”
The Minister highlighted research findings indicating that new infections are largely driven by unprotected sexual activities and a lack of awareness among the youth about the consequences of risky behavior.
Following his remarks, some young people living with HIV shared their experiences to caution their peers. Claudine, 24, shared her story: “I contracted HIV while in high school. I thought I was safe because I had only one partner and didn’t use condoms. For months, I didn’t know I was infected. I now regret ignoring advice like the one the Minister is giving today.”
Jean Bosco, 29, also shared how the virus disrupted his plans. “I went for testing after feeling unwell, and the results came back positive. At the time, I was engaged, but my fiancée left me. Although I’m managing my condition with medication, the emotional toll remains heavy.”
Young people attending the event agreed that using condoms is key to prevention. One participant said: “You can’t stop people from having sex, but condoms are an effective way to stay safe.”
Rubavu District will host the 2024 World AIDS Day celebration on Sunday, December 1, under the theme: “Ending AIDS is My Responsibility.”
Dr. Sabin called on everyone to support efforts to combat HIV, emphasizing that abstinence and condom use remain critical strategies to prevent new infections.
