Today, Kigali became the epicenter of global health dialogue as Rwanda hosted the inaugural International Health Ministerial Summit. Themed “Strengthening Health Systems for a Better Tomorrow,” this two-day event attracted leaders, innovators, and policymakers from across the globe to discuss solutions to pressing health challenges.
Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, opened the summit, emphasizing Rwanda’s commitment to universal healthcare and innovation in health systems. He highlighted the success of community-based health insurance and robust immunization programs, urging global collaboration to combat diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chair of Egypt’s Health Authority, who discussed advancements in digital health, and Hon. Benjamin Hounkpatin, Minister of Health from Benin, who focused on equitable access to medicines. Hon. Dr. Deborah Barasa, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, underscored the need for cross-border cooperation to strengthen health infrastructure in Africa.
Private sector leaders, including Dr. Allan Pamba from Roche Diagnostics, showcased the role of innovation in transforming healthcare delivery. “Collaborations like these have the potential to reshape healthcare access in Africa,” said Dr. Pamba.
The summit also featured dynamic panel discussions on women’s health and strategies to scale up healthcare investments in low-income countries. Attendees expressed optimism about actionable outcomes, particularly in addressing healthcare disparities and fostering sustainable systems.
